Erdogan's statements provoking discrimination and violence against
Kurds
Prime Minister told the press his impression of his visits in Van and
Hakkari.
A journalist reminded the PM that a man fired shots at protestors on a
side road in İstanbul Beyoğlu asking "People are incited. Painful
things happened in this country in the past. Are some trying to lead
the country into a climate of confrontations again. What do you advice
to citizens on this issue?" Erdoğan answered:
"I advice citizens to be patient. But I am worried how long that
patience would last. If you smash the shop windows, risk citizens
lives, they will defend themselves."
Erdoğan said they (DTP) lost elections in Van and worried that they
will this time as well. Erdoğan said:
"They wanted to make people pull down shutters of the shops but
citizens in Van did not do that. Then they set fire on their cars.
They set fire on the cars of 3-4 citizens. They tried to set fire on
the fire engine. They smashed some shop windows. They are members of
that particular party and escaped to the offices of that party.... This
is not struggle for freedom since there is nobody who is not free."
In Hakkâri, Erdogan said "They are firing shots at our unity. We have
to get rid of this. Let us not buy these games. It is a shame, it is a
sin. We have to be together and in unity. What did we say? We said one
nation, one flag, one motherland, one state. They objected to that.
Those who oppose that have no place in Turkey. They may go anywhere
they wish... it is the way things are wherever they go in the world."
DTP leader Ahmet Türk said that Erdoğan made a racist comment in
Hakkâri and the mentality of 'love or leave' was an example of
recklessness.
Türk said "This country and the flag are common values of Kurds and
Turks and other who created them together. Nobody has the monopoly
over them. However Erdoğan's inviting those who refuse his racist
approach to leave the country is an example of ignorance." (antenna-
